John Denver became a star thanks to the folk songs that he wrote, many of them set in Colorado. He was born Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. in Roswell New Mexico, the singer-songwriter fell in love with Colorado and eventually relocated to Aspen. Denver's iconic anthems for Colorado are a source of inspiration for many to move to the state. G. Brown, curator of the Colorado Music Hall of Fame declared the following: John Denver is the only artist to represent Colorado. Denver was the first Hall of Fame ever to be inducted. Denver is the symbol of Colorado for a lot of people across the globe. In all my travels I have met many people who are not from Colorado. People will declare, "Oh John Denver!" whenever they learn that you're from Colorado. Brown declared. Take Me Home Country Roads - cowritten with Bill Danoff - was Denver's first Top 10 single as a solo singer after a brief stint in small folk bands. Danoff created the track with Johnny Cash in mind but when Denver was introduced to an earlier version it was clear that it was destined to be the next hit single. Danoff recorded the song just a few days following playing in Washington D.C. before an large crowd who were very appreciative.
